I can't remember the last time I watched any of these films. So why wouldn't I donate them to a place where someone else can enjoy them? Yes of course there is a slight feeling of guilt where the thought of me wanting to see one of these films may come, however I can always enjoy them rented. Letting go of them will clear up my living space and give back to the environment. Donating is good for the environment because what is donated is not produced all over again; donating means less production. Less production means less energy and fuel used to get it to where it needs to go. For instance, if I wanted to see a movie, I could rent it. That same movie can be rented over a hundred times. Renting them will create a decrease on their demand because there will be no need for their production. The key is to reduce what can be reused. Why buy books when I can order them from my local library? I could borrow it and then return it for someone else to use. It not only saves on the earths valuable resources it took to make that book, but it also saves on energy, and lots of extra money in my pocket. The key is to donate what can be reused. Next step: Donate books! What is your take on an idea like this?
Feeling pretty good about this! :)
ReplyDeleteJust dropped by to say hello-have subscribed to your blog so I can get updates by email. Look forward to reading your next post.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I just got started with living this new lifestyle. I am in the process of getting ready for my wedding, moving out of my house, so for now, trying it with my mother seems difficult but we're getting through. I cant wait till I have the full opportunity to live zero waste in my new life with my future husband. How long has it been for you? What were the pros and cons? Any info is helpful! :)
ReplyDeleteYou can read all about our zero waste journey on the earlier posts on our zerowastelifesyle blog.
ReplyDeleteMy take is that borrowing is better :) That being said, I do have a stack of movies (blu-ray, slimmer case thankfully!) and a bookcase of books that I watch/re-read often enough that it's actually more wasteful for me to donate. Driving to my library to rent or check out these books is less cost effective than holding onto them. Although, the idea of pitching most of them rides on my mind often. I'm a year away from moving from my current town to a new locale (TBD - externship!) and crave being able to fit everything except furniture into my car and it seems like a burden to have to keep track of (especially books) heavier/multiple/not everyday use items.
